How to use the Image Converter

JPG vs PNG vs WebP: which should you use?

Different websites and apps accept different image formats. A form might only take JPG, a design tool might need PNG with a transparent background, and images downloaded from the web are often WebP files that some older apps cannot open. This converter changes the format in a few seconds, right in your browser.

JPG (JPEG) is the most widely supported format and is ideal for photos. It uses lossy compression, so files are small, but it cannot store transparency. Choose JPG when a website or government portal asks for it, or when you want the widest compatibility.

PNG is lossless, so it keeps every pixel exactly. It is best for screenshots, logos, text and graphics with sharp edges, and it supports transparent backgrounds. PNG photos are much larger than JPG.

WebP is a modern format made for the web. It supports transparency and is usually 25–35% smaller than JPG at similar quality, which makes websites load faster. All current browsers support it, but some older software does not.

Converting does not improve quality. Turning a small JPG into a PNG will make the file bigger without making it sharper. Also note that animated GIFs are converted using their first frame only.

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. Conversion happens entirely in your browser on your own device. Your images are never uploaded or stored anywhere.

How do I convert WebP to JPG?

Add your WebP file, make sure JPG is selected under "Convert to", then click Download. You can convert many WebP files at once the same way.

Why did my transparent background turn white?

JPG does not support transparency, so transparent areas must be filled with a colour. Change the background colour, or convert to PNG or WebP to keep transparency.

Why is my PNG bigger than the original JPG?

PNG stores every pixel without compression loss, so photos saved as PNG are much larger. For photos, JPG or WebP is usually the better choice.

Can I convert iPhone HEIC photos?

Most browsers cannot read HEIC files yet. On your iPhone, go to Settings → Camera → Formats and choose "Most Compatible" to save new photos as JPG.
